INTIMATE WHISPERS
10th - 16th September 2024
Huang Contemporary Gallery presented
Spilit Gallery
INTIMATE WHISPERS, the exhibition explores how artists navigate their personal lives and emotions in intimate spaces that embody domestic culture, including the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. This cultural and experiential connection becomes splintered as artists move their lives and creative practices to London. Artists Mengqi Xia, Xiaofan Li and Ying Luo use textiles as a medium to move from domestic space to exhibition space, deeply intertwined with personal memory. The textiles on display evoke an empathy with domesticity, daily life and social practices, with textures, colours and weaving techniques reflecting regional traditions.
These works can reconstruct or evoke domestic spaces, creating a familiar environment with emotional resonance for the audience. Artist Zhenzhen Tian responds to the theme with dreams in acrylic on canvas, which connect to primal emotions and memories by using symbols like beds, swans, and candles, Kangying Lou finds the amusement of self-introspection by the oriental Zen tea ceremony, and Maggie Meijun captures intimate moments of life through her lens.
